Meet your Instructor

Program Director, Fellowship & English Learners

Mary Rakes

Mary Rakes is a Program Director at the Diverse Learners Cooperative, leading our Teacher Leader Fellowship work as well as EL Strategy. She works with school teams to implement creative and effective solutions for English learners, centered around evidence-best practices. She received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Taylor University and her M.Ed. in Reading Education with a focus on English Learners at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College. She is a seasoned EL teacher, specializing in teaching newcomer students. In 2016, she was awarded the Teacher of the Year at Una Elementary and was a Fishman Prize Honor Roll recipient.
